Spring 2016

Have we made it through another New England winter? For members of the New Britain Sail & Power Squadron the time passed quickly.

Merit Marks were presented (via e-mail) to ten of our members. A minimum of 14 volunteer hours were needed for acceptance by the area monitor.

In January, members attended a Norwich Power Squadron meeting/program where they learned about the work going on at Little Gull Island with Helen Hayes. The Hartford Boat Show was well attended. Members of various squadrons, including New Britain, assisted in manning the Hartford booth. New & experienced boaters found the “simulator” quite interesting and challenging.

On 22 February our members attended the Newington library for a program by William and Helen Gillette impersonators, Harold Niver and his wife Theodora. They entertained the audience with many unknown facts about William and Helen, the “castle” and the famous Sherlock Holmes. A brief business meeting of the squadron was held prior to the program.

On 26 February, the D1 Council meeting was held at Eversource. Shared information included:

  • Past National Chief Commander Doreen Hinksman of the Canadian Power Squadron will be the Chief’s representative.
  • The Spring Conference will be held at the Branford Yacht Club, 19 March.

Pre- Conference dinner, Friday 18 March at Brazi’s Italian Restaurant. Reservations by 11 March to Charles Greenbacker, 860-742-1714 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

FORMS OD-2 (list of Officers) and ED-1 and 2 (list of Education Officers) have been filed with National for 2016-17. No challengers to any office nominees have been made known and no volunteers for any position have come forward. None of the nominees have refused their nomination nor indicated a refusal to accept the position. Fortunately there are enough people that want to keep the New Britain Power Squadron active.
